Sirke '1997

Latvių scena man visada labai patiko. Galėtume apie ją kalbėti ilgai ir nenuobodžiai. Mano atradimai buvo pirmiausia Sirke, vėliau Varka Crew, ambientovo indiapo ir kino soundtrekų meistras Jānis Žilde ir jo The Satellites, The Movies, Dzeltenie Pastnieki ("Geltonieji Laiškanešiai") - psichodelinis folkas, tokie 80-ųjų Beta Band "meets" Kraftwerk, Latvijas Gaza, klubas Pulkvedim Neviens Neraksta, daugybė gerų festivalių - Skanu Mežs, Trincstock (rašėm apie jį ir ore.lt), Klusa Daba, Kuldiga ir jų kultūrinis centras Nekac (kuris, kiek girdėjau, toliau plečiasi ir bujoja, kudos!), ir visas tas rokas. Tornis, net tokie maži miesteliai kaip Ventspils (kolektyvas Daba) sugebėjo išsileisti nuostabias (elektronines/reggae/dub/nujazz) vietinių atlikėjų kompiliacijas.

Kaimynai ir toliau valdo. Anksčiau John Peel savo laidoje grojo latvišką hardcore drum'n'bass, o dabar jau Mary Anne Hobbs groja Oyaarss ir vadina jį "one of the most thrilling dubstep producers in the world" (ačiū Donatui už tai kad klausosi Mary Anne kasdien ir atsiunčia man naujienas.)

Dublicate kino teatre (foto Ebo)

Tuo tarpu čia savaitgalį turėjau progą paklausyt tiek kaimynų, tiek savų, AT Movement organizuotam vakarėly Klaipėdos "Žemaitijos" k/t. Antroje scenoje, mažoje kino salėje, Varkos Kone, Aklais ir Betons klasikiniam reggae su gyvais būgnais sunkiai sekėsi pakelti tingiai drybsančius ant sėdynių. Užtat neplanuotai išdygę renginio programoje Dublicate - buvo smagiausias momentas. Greit susistatė aparatūrą, ir gražiai, stipriai užvyniojo, salę iškart ištraukė į kitą dimensiją. Netrukus praktiškai nebebuvo kur atsistoti ir kuo kvėpuoti, žmonės tikrąja to žodžio prasme trynėsi į būgnus ir gitaras (ir muzikantus). Tai ko ir laukiau, ačiū! (Nuotraukų ir video įdėsiu vėliau)

The scene of our Latvian neigbours was always lively, extremely interesting and inspiring. My first discoveries and personal favourites were indie band Sirke, a multi-instrumentalist and soundtrack musician Jānis Žilde and his band The Satellites, drum'n'bass and reggae mfs Varka Crew, fresh sounding pop band The Movies, an avangard-psychedelic folk band Dzeltenie Pastnieki ("Yellow Postmen") sounding a bit like 80-ies Beta Band, Latvijas Gaza, club Pulkvedim Neviens Neraksta, many brilliant small and DiY festivals - Skanu Mežs, Trincstock, Klusa Daba, Kuldiga and their cultural centre Nekac and all that jazz, record label and information centre Tornis. Even such small towns as Ventspils (collective DABA) were releasing small beautiful compilations of local elektronic/reggae/dub/nujazz bands and artists.

John Peel (R.I.P.) played in his shows some obscure latvian hardcore drum'n'bass offshoots, and now Mary Anne Hobbs informs us about our neighbours - her latest discovery is Oyaarss whom Mary Anne calles "one of the most thrilling dubstep producers in the world". This weekend I attended a nice party in Lithuanian port city Klaipeda's former cinema (the old cinemas are sadly being closed one by one here) to catch up with both our neighbours and the locals. Varka Crew were mixing clasic raggae with live drums set, while Lithuanian prodigies Dublicate brought the wole crowd to another dimension with their amazing organic, trippy, jazzy, dub-infused sound. Thanks a bunch!

WN: You talked about the 9 million Super 8 cameras in the 1960s. Today, even more people than that are using digital video. Do you think all these filmmakers will change cinema?

Mekas: I mentioned that number, the 9 million, when talking to (director Pier Paolo) Pasolini in Paris in 1968, during the student revolution. "Maybe something interesting will happen with their cameras," I said. "These cameras can change the nature of communications." And he said, "There are more typewriters than cameras. Did that change the world? Did that make this revolution?"

WN: But the digital cameras must be having an influence.

Mekas: Yes, yes definitely. New technologies make more money than old ones.

Lithuanian Jonas Mekas needs no introduction to America's arts scene. In fact he's one of its great-fathers.

His latest project is to create and show 365 films in 365 days - every day until the end of 2007. The poetic shorts will be cut out from Mekas' massive collection of diary footage, documenting explosive 60's NYC scene.
